Robert L. (Lindy) Shambaugh
Lindy Shambaugh has over 33 years of engineering and management experience working for Pratt & Whitney. Mr. Shambaugh has held a variety of positions throughout his career in several engineering disciplines, in product manufacturing management, in marketing, and in program management. He has applied Lean Methodologies in his assignments since they became available His broad background provides a unique perspective into the benefits of UTC’s Achieving Competitive Excellence program. Here are additional details of his background and accomplishments:
- Structures Engineer – Conducted the first successful finite element stress analysis of a turbine blade at Pratt & Whitney leading to today’s automated processes.
- Laser Engineer – Conducted flow and stress analyses of high energy chemical lasers leading to successful testing.
- Engine Test Engineer – Lead the team that developed the first successful optical pyrometer for measuring turbine blade temperatures of an operating Pratt & Whitney engine. Optical pyrometers are now common engine diagnostic tools.
- Materials Engineer – Initiated the use of modern robotics at Pratt & Whitney for automated non-destructive testing (i.e., eddy current and ultrasonics inspection) of turbine engine components.
- Executive Assistant – Led a team to streamline the operation of Pratt & Whitney’s 2500-person Engineering Department under the Senior Vice President of Engineering.
- Manufacturing Manager – Developed processes to help Pratt & Whitney meet engine production schedules.
- Pratt & Whitney St. Louis Field Office Manager – Lead a team that successfully regained the diminishing confidence of a major aircraft manufacturer in Pratt & Whitney’s customer mindset.
- Fighter Engine Marketing Manager – Successfully marketed a new fighter engine early in its development program that has become part of the largest government contract in history.
- Program Manager – Successfully developed processes for the management of a unique collaboration between three engine companies that would work together cooperatively during the development of new fighter engines that uses common components and then compete for engine sales following that development.
Mr. Shambaugh retired in Florida in 2005 and pursuing personal interests including refurbishing, building, and flying aircraft. He has a Bachelors of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Florida. He also earned a Masters of Science degree in Engineering Sciences from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
