Daniel J. Long
Dan has accumulated 33 years of experience in manufacturing and lean deployment. After more than 31 years of service, Dan retired from Pratt & Whitney in 2006 and joined a major Rotating Equipment OEM as the Global Process Innovation Mgr. responsible for developing and standardizing lean training material for deployment across all divisions. Prior to his retirement, Dan was part on the supplier Lean development team for the P&W International and Domestic Parts Center. His responsibilities included identifying opportunities for lead-time reduction and quality improvement and convincing suppliers in the use lean (ACE) tools to improve performance as well as preparing and conducting lean events.
Activities and responsibilities:
- Lead Processes Innovation team in the development of 7 Core Lean tool training and workshop material for a global compressor manufacturer
- Conducted train the trainer sessions in 6S, TPM, Setup Reduction, QCPC and Standard work for the development of Lean Leaders.
- Trained pre-Kaizen teams and prepared all info for Shingijutsu consultant lead Kaizens.
- Core team member responsible for the development requirements of the UTC OTL program.
- Developed supplier ACE Pilots and initiative at a major P&W supplier. Monitored and assisted supplier with training and implementation needs for 4 years.
- Implemented TPM program including the development of their CMMS system resulting in accurate down time data collection. System used to identify TPM activities on category “A” equipment leading to a 37% downtime reduction w/in one year.
- Facilitated setup reduction of an automated cell, identified as a bottleneck, from 3-day (2 shifts) to one shift.
- Used lean tool knowledge to reduce lead-time for part holding the PW4000 assembly line from 28 days to 5 days for start of delivery
- Conducted DOE on P&W 4000 Fan Exit Guide Vane with associate, to reduce voids causing 100% repair requirement and resulting in 75% improvement.
- Technical ME responsible for the manufacturing processes of the inner and outer cases of the F100 fan assembly. Certified EDM process for the F100 fan cases using the Process Certification steps.
Dan has a strong belief in improvement through training and alignment of all disciplines required for running any successful organization. Only through standardized training and implementation processes will sustainability result.
Dan is a graduate of the P&W Apprenticeship program in 1980. He holds both a Bachelors and Masters degrees in Industrial technologies, Management and Quality in 2003 from Central Connecticut State University.
